Japan (in Japanese you should read it Nippon or Nihon, from the Japanese kanji), is an island country located in East Asia.

Japanis in thePacific Ocean, specifically in theSea of Japan. It is surrounded byChina,KoreaandRussiato the East andTaiwanin the North.

Etymologically speaking, the kanji (or ideograms) that make up the name of Japan (日本) means “place of origin (本) of the sun (日)” and this is why we often call this country ‘the country of the rising sun”

Japan, since 1945 and the end of the 2nd World War, consists of over 6000 islands, the four largest (and most famous of all) are Honshū, Hokkaidō, Kyūshū et Shikoku, and together they represent 97% of the land area.

In Japan, the population is the tenth world with approximately 127 million inhabitants for 377,835 square kilometres (a density of 337 inhabitants per km²). The greatTokyo, including the capital of the same name and several surrounding prefectures, is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world with over 30 million inhabitants.

Japanis known as the third largest world economic power (Chinahas recently past 2nd instead ofJapan).Japan is a developed country, with a very high standard of living and longest life expectancy in the world, according to UN estimates.
